Wellness Health and Life Experiences Study

The purpose of our study is to understand how early life experiences can affect brain development in children.

Age & Gender

  • 4 years ~ 6 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed


North Carolina (Alamance, Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Guilford, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Wake)

What will be asked of you

Participation in this study will include 3 in-person visits. The first in-person session will take place at your home and will last approx. 2.5 hours. The second in-person session will take place in Howell Hall on UNC's campus and last approx. 6 hours. The third and final in-person session includes an MRI and will last approx. 3.5 hours. During all three visits, we will ask you to fill out questionnaires/surveys, and your child will play games with research assistants.

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • You live within a 1 hour radius from UNC Chapel Hill

Not eligible if:

  • Your child has participated in the Child Experiences Study at UNC
  • Your child has a diagnosis of autism or a pervasive developmental disorder
