Pathways to Adolescent Success

In this study, we want to identify biological characteristics in children ages 12-14 who experience anxiety that may increase their risk for substance use over time.

North Carolina (Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Nash, Orange, Wake)

What will be asked of you

At each visit, you will complete some questionnaires about your family background and your child's behavior, psychological state, and lifestyle. Your child will also complete questionnaires and thinking tasks, and a mild stress test while we measure heart rate, electrical activity in the skin and stress hormones. We will also do imaging of their brain while performing cognitive computer games.

Incentives

Up to $225 for parents and up to $480 for youth if all procedures and visits are completed.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

Symptoms of anxiety in the child, from mild to severe
Child is between 12-14

Not eligible if:

Active psychosis or severe emotional disturbance
Child has non-removable metal in or on body
Child has used alcohol, tobacco or marijuana more than 3 times
Child has had head injury that led to unconsciousness
