Infant Nutrition & Cognition Study

We want to learn how the nutrition in eggs eaten by a breastfeeding mom will help improve the brain function of her baby through the nutrients in the mother's milk.

Age & Gender

  • 3 months ~ 35 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed

Location

North Carolina (Cabarrus, Catawba, Davidson, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly, Union)

What will be asked of you

We will ask the mother to eat either a whole egg or egg whites 5 times a week for 3 months while exclusively breastfeeding. Your baby will be tested at 4.5 months with a developmental milestones test and at 6 months on a recognition memory test. Saliva, blood, and breastmilk samples will be taken. Diet will be recorded.

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • exclusively breastfeeding
  • baby born at term
  • no complications with pregnancy or birth
  • pre-pregnancy BMI below 30

Not eligible if:

  • you are younger than 18 or older than 35
  • had gestational diabetes
  • not planning to exclusively breastfeed to age 6 months
