This project will fund data collection for a natural experiment that jointly measures the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and social participation impacts of an e-bike voucher pilot in Raleigh, North Carolina. The city will soon invite residents to enter a lottery to win one of 150 e-bike vouchers. A portion of these vouchers will offer a deeper discount to low-income applicants. The lottery is a natural experiment that allows us to evaluate the causal effects of e-bike incentives, and e-bikes themselves, on travel behavior and quality of life. We will collect data through a panel survey of lottery participants before and after vouchers are awarded, with those who do not receive vouchers serving as a control group. . We will additionally provide study participants with access to OpenPATH, a real-time smartphone app developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to track changes in driving levels.

Immigrant teachers-who make up approximately 8% of the American K-12 teaching workforce-bring valuable diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, language, and religion. However, they also face unique challenges in addition to the systemic difficulties affecting all teachers in the U.S. education system. These challenges include navigating restrictive immigration policies, credential recognition barriers, hiring discrimination, limited career advancement, and difficulties adapting to curricula and school environments as non-native English speakers. Furthermore, they may experience racial, ethnic, and linguistic discrimination from students, parents, colleagues, and administrators, as well as structural discrimination embedded in institutional policies at the school, state, and federal levels. While there is extensive research on the discrimination faced by minoritized students and teachers of color in U.S. schools and by immigrant teachers of color in international schooling contexts, little attention has been given to the specific discriminatory experiences of immigrant teachers within the United States.
The purpose of this research study is to understand how Karen housekeepers at UNC use produce grown by the Carolina Community Garden. We are interested in what vegetables you eat, if you have preferences for new varieties, and how you cook them. We are also interested in the social activities that accompany the cooking and eating of this produce. For example, with whom do you eat regularly? Who cooks in your household? Do you eat with non-family members?
