Collaborative Communities: How Collaboration Among Ecologically-Concerned Organizations in North Carolina can Inform Resilient Approaches to Regional Social-Ecological Challenges

I am researching the dynamics of collaboration among environmental and community health organizations in North Carolina. I want to understand how they work together, formally and informally, to address regional socio-environmental challenges and foster ecological and organizational resilience. To do so, I am identifying patterns of collaboration and resource-sharing that foster innovative solutions, address organizational challenges, and enhance regional resilience. The goal is to provide actionable insights through co-developed tools and interventions that organizations, policymakers, and advocates can use to foster and strengthen collaboration.

Pharmacy based diabetic eye screening

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in working age Americans. Vision loss due to DR can be prevented with early detection and treatment. However, the rate of retinopathy screening remains low. Pharmacies are often a patient's primary point of contact with the health profession. Hence, this study aims to determine the feasibility of integrating a portable handheld camera for eye screening without the need for pupil dilation at pharmacies located in rural and urban areas of North Carolina. The average consumer visits a pharmacy 35 times per year, making pharmacies an ideal setting for evaluating this DR screening model. Additionally, we will also assess the feasibility of integrating an automated grading system for retinal images. If successful, results from this study can be used to increase and improve community-based health care by integrating pharmacies and clinical care.

Advancing Equity through Multi-Campus Learning Communities

The primary purpose of this research is to share insights gained from developing and teaching a new, multi-campus course. We ask: what are the unique contributions and challenges of developing a cross-campus, collaborative learning model for teaching planning and equity related topics? How and why did the zoning for equity collaborative learning model evolve over time? What are the lessons learned and takeaways from such a pedagogical innovation? We answer these questions by analyzing the following data: archived course materials and anonymous student evaluations, transcripts of the guided discussions among faculty who developed and offered the course, and transcripts of the interviews of former-students who took the class.
