Familial hypercholesterolemia in the United States

The purpose of this research is to improve early diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and through the implementation of cascade screening, or family genetic testing for FH. To identify areas for improvement, we are recruiting stakeholders to participate in qualitative interviews. We will use this information to better understand barriers and facilitators for a specific diagnostic strategy called cascade screening. This strategy involves contacting family members to discuss their risk of having familial hypercholesterolemia and arranging for screening to check for very high cholesterol and genes associated with it. Once this tool has been implemented, we will conduct 20 more qualitative interviews to further understand barriers and facilitators to adoption of the diagnostic tool.

Psychoneuroimmunology Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience

Our experimental aims are to 1) evaluate two methods for collecting dried blood spots (i.e., finger prick versus Tasso M20) and 2) examine correlations between psychological variables and pro-inflammatory markers. To achieve these, we will be implementing a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) and plan to assess its effectiveness in student success (e.g., academic performance, involvement in research, and retention in STEM).

Cerebral spinal fluid collection of Normal Pressure Hydrocephaly for Alzheimer's disease research

We are collecting cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from Normal Pressure Hydrocephaly (NPH) patients to generate a biosample research repository. This repository will be used to research CSF biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease that may enhance our ability to detect and monitor Alzheimer's disease diagnoses and progression.

Diphthong Raising

Participants in this study are asked to read a list of words, then sort the words into categories based on their vowel sounds (ignoring letters). We are trying to find out how different two sounds have to be acoustically before speakers consider them to be linguistically different.
