This study investigates whether and how local economic power explains the unequal state development in Chile. On the one hand, I intend to assess how close ties between businesspeople and mayors obstruct the state's efforts to improve social services and goods for the population. On the other hand, I aim to study how these close linkages curb the extent that local politicians invest in a better capacity to collect money from taxes.

I am interested in seeing what may make some Women's Police Stations more effective than others. It is important to know the conditions under which these stations do their jobs, to prevent and respond to violence against women.
