What is an adult?

Traditionally, someone is said to be an adult when they have met certain milestones like moving out of their parents' household, finishing education, beginning full-time work, marrying, and having children. But these milestones are harder to achieve nowadays, and some people might not even aspire to achieve them. Even more, we don't know much about how people in non-Western settings feel about these definitions of adulthood. While marriage is usually still a culturally important milestone, it is becoming delayed and harder to achieve. In my research, I want to find out how young people who just got married/will soon marry understand "adulthood." I focus Jakarta, Indonesia, the second largest city in the world, where tough economic times and a globalized culture meets strong traditions and religious values.
