Throughout Latin America, public security is an increasingly important issue due to growing concerns regarding drug trafficking, organized crime, homicides, and violence. While much of the research on the topic focuses on citizens' support for hard-on-crime policing and politicians' subsequent enactment of such policies, scholars have not studied the responses of the innocent people who become unintended victims of these policies through government-sponsored violence. How do these people seek to hold the state accountable for the negative consequences of hard-on-crime policies? Which policies do they seek to advance? With which other civil society actors and policymakers do they ally and why? Most importantly, when are they successful in shaping public security policy? In this research project, I focus on the organized resistance against police brutality in Brazil's urban areas, especially in the poorer regions known as favelas.
To better understand the impact of UNC's Bridge the Gap program.
This project is studying the effect of pediatric care coordination on the behavioral health of children and parents.
The purpose of this research study is to learn more about the quality of life for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This study focuses on how communities near the coast deal with frequent but shallow flooding. We focus on small towns in Carteret County, NC, where families have lived for a long time. We want to talk to residents here to understand how they see their quality of life changing as flooding increases. We also want to see if their tolerance for this type of flooding changes depending on how bad it is and which areas are affected. By talking to residents and modeling flooding, we hope to characterize how livable this place may be in the future considering these floods.
We are interested in how information regarding political leadership affects how adults evaluate leaders during periods of crisis. This study is part of a larger NSF-funded project examining political accountability during crisis and the vignette study is an attempt to get at the psychological foundations of public opinion during crises.
A multi-center open-label trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of daratumumab in treatment of patients with proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits.
Obesity is associated with chronic inflammation, which increases the risk for other metabolic diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids and their derivatives have anti-inflammatory properties but are reduced in people who are overweight or obese. The purpose of this study is to determine if omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (SPM Active) for 3 months can effectively increase the biological levels of its lipid components in adult males who are overweight or obese. Additionally, we will determine if supplementation with SPM Active can improve mental health outcomes, as measured by validated surveys.
The purpose of this study is to understand the planning and implementation process of the Summer EBT program in Rhode Island and North Carolina.
Systematic reviews (SRs) of healthcare interventions should identify patient safety concerns; however, many SRs are designed to assess benefits, and preliminary evidence suggests that conclusions about harms in SRs might not be trustworthy. Using >19,000 SRs of drugs for which we have full texts (including >4,000 overlapping reviews), and using innovative methods for analysis (e.g., natural language processing), we will examine whether information about safety in SRs is consistent, whether SRs address safety concerns identified using real-world evidence, and whether SRs are consistent with safety information on drug labels. Based on best evidence, including findings from this study, we will develop contemporary guidance for synthesizing and reporting safety information in SRs.
