BandPass: A Remote Monitoring System for Strength

Our research team has created a Bluetooth enabled resistance exercise band (BandPass) and a corresponding workout 'app' to help older adults' strength train at home. The purpose of this research project is to help develop an algorithm that can distinguish between an exercise performed correctly and incorrectly. This will allow older adults to improve their form and optimize the therapeutic benefit of exercising.

What will be asked of you

During this in-person visit, you will be interacting with a tablet and exercise band in order for you to complete all study activities. At that time, you will be instructed to conduct 10 reps of each of five upper (bicep curl, standing row, arm lift, front raise, chest press) and five lower body resistance exercises (deadlift, squat, seated leg press, standing hip extension, standing hip abduction) correctly. You will then be instructed to complete 3 sets of 10 reps of each of these exercises incorrectly. The staff will ask you to complete some demographic surveys at this time. Data from the 'app' will be examined to determine if the data was correctly collected and the device and application are functioning normally. The session will be video and audio recorded.
