COPD and Nose Immune Response Study

We are studying people with COPD and healthy volunteers to see if the response to the nasal flu vaccine can tell us more about COPD control. To do this, we will collect nasal and blood samples before and for up to 3 weeks after the nasal flu vaccine.

Age & Gender

  • 40 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)

What will be asked of you

At the first visit, we will ask you questions, have you do breathing and blood tests to see if you are able to take part. If so, we will collect blood and 3 different types of nose samples. We will then give you the nasal flu vaccine. You will come back on days 1, 2, 3, 7 and 21 after the flu vaccine to repeat these collections. You will also answer questions at each visit.

Incentives

$75 per visit plus $75 for completing all visits (up to $675)

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You are at least 40 years old
  • You have COPD
  • You used to smoke, but don't now

Not eligible if:

  • You use oxygen during the daytime
  • You use nasal sprays (steroids)
  • You ever had COVID infection
  • You have a weakened immune system
  • You are around people with weakened immune systems

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • You are at least 40 years old
  • You never smoked
  • You don't have any lung troubles (Asthma)

Not eligible if:

  • You use nasal sprays (steroids)
  • You ever had COVID infection
  • You have a weakened immune system
  • You are around people with weakened immune systems
