AYA Connect

We are doing this study to test a behavioral weight loss program designed specifically for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. Study participants will use new technology, including a digital smart scale, Fitbit activity tracker, and study iPhone app to help them lose weight.

What will be asked of you

If you participate in this study, you will receive a Fitbit activity tracker, a digital smart scale, and access to a weight loss app. You will be asked to complete online questionnaires 3 times.  The entire 6-month program can be completed online; however, there is an option for a small group of people to visit our research center for additional measurements (these participants will receive an additional $10 per visit). 

Incentives

$40 for completing measurements at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months timepoints (for a total of $120)

Total length of participation:
8 months (6 month program with 1-2 additional months to complete assessment measures at beginning and end)

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • Diagnosed with first invasive cancer between the ages of 15-39 years old
  • Within 10 years of diagnosis with no evidence of progressive disease or second primary cancers
  • Completed active cancer directed therapy (cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or definitive surgical intervention) at least six months prior to enrollment, except may be receiving "maintenance"
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-50 kg/m2
  • You have an iPhone

Not eligible if:

  • Type 1 diabetes or currently receiving medical treatment for Type 2 diabetes
  • Health problems which preclude ability to walk for physical activity
  • Lost 5% or more of body weight (and kept it off) in the last 3 months
  • Currently pregnant, pregnant within the past 6 months, or planning to become pregnant within the next 6 months
  • Currently participating in a weight loss, nutrition, or physical activity study or program or other study that would interfere with this study
