Women's Irritability, Stress, and Estrogen Study (WISE)

We want to learn more about how hormones affect your mood during the menopause transition. We are looking for women ages 45-59 experiencing mood changes during the menopause transition to take part in this study.

  • 45 years ~ 59 years
  • Female

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Weekend hours, if needed

What will be asked of you

The first study visit will include questionnaires to assess your current mood and medical history. If you are eligible, there will be a 4-week period where we will ask you to answer some questions and complete daily urine tests at home. Then, there will be 3 weeks each of wearing an estrogen patch and a patch with no active medication (placebo) with a 3-week break in between. We will also ask you to come to the laboratory to examine your brain activity using a non-invasive EEG cap while you are completing computerized tasks.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • A woman between 45-59
  • Are medically healthy in the menopause transition (having irregular or skipped periods)
  • Are currently experiencing mood changes, particularly irritability

Not eligible if:

  • Currently use psychotropic medications, hormonal preparations, or certain herbal supplements (e.g., St. John's Wort or black cohosh)
  • Currently suffer from, or have a history of: any cardiovasular diease, diabetes, cancer, migraines, bipolar disorder or psychosis
  • Strong family history of breast, ovarian, or uterine cancer
