Antibiotics, Bacteria, and UTI Prevention Study

The purpose of this study is to compare the bacteria in women who are taking either methenamine hippurate (Hiprex) or nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) every day to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). We will compare bacteria in the bladder, vagina, and rectum. The information we learn by doing this study may help us better understand how these medications work to prevent UTIs.

What will be asked of you

At each visit, you will fill out questionnaires and provide a urine, vaginal, and rectal sample. Urine will be collected using a small catheter in a clean fashion. Swabs will be used to collect vaginal and rectal samples.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

You have recurrent urinary tract infections (2 or more UTIs in 6 months, or 3 in a year)
You are postmenopausal (have not had a period for over 1 year, or had your ovaries surgically removed)
You are starting either daily nitrofurantoin or methenamine hippurate for UTI prevention

Not eligible if:

You stopped or started vaginal or oral estrogen in the last month, and not willing to wait for 1month to start new UTI prevention medications
You used antibiotics in the last month, and are not willing to wait for 1 month to start new UTI prevention medications
You currently have an active vaginal, urinary, or bowel infection, and are not willing to wait for 1 month after infection to start UTI prevention
