Physical Activity, Alcohol, Obesity, and Inflammation Study

We are studying how people's daily physical activity and alcohol use behaviors are related to their risk for obesity and inflammation. We are collecting this information to learn more about disease risk and to inform future research studies and interventions.

Age & Gender

  • 21 years ~ 44 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

At the baseline visit, you will meet with a member of the study team to complete the consent process, fill out surveys, and collect height, weight, and body composition measures. You will repeat those measures at the follow-up visit and do a blood draw of ~14 mL of blood. You will also wear an activity monitor during your daily life for 3 weeks and complete two brief (~3 minute) surveys each day for 3 weeks.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • Overweight or Obese (BMI >= 25 kg/m2)
  • Drink alcohol at least 1 day per week
  • Own an Apple iPhone 6S or newer (iOS 13 compatible)
  • Willing to download and use two free smartphone apps
  • Able to be physically active

Not eligible if:

  • Current or past history of alcohol use disorder
  • Current or past history of cardiovascular (heart) disease
  • Current or past history of metabolic disease (e.g., diabetes, hypo/hyperthyroidism)
  • Current or past history of cancer
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • Overweight or Obese (BMI >= 25 kg/m2)
  • Non-Drinker
  • Own a smartphone
  • Willing to download and use one free smartphone app
  • Able to be physically active

Not eligible if:

  • Current or past history of alcohol use disorder
  • Current or past history of cardiovascular (heart) disease
  • Current or past history of metabolic disease (e.g., diabetes, hypo/hyperthyroidism)
  • Current or past history of cancer
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
