We are conducting a study to evaluate patterns of specific blood proteins that may explain differences in how β-hydroxy-methyl-butyrate (HMB), a protein supplement acts in older adults with weakness. When we use the term weakness, we refer to changes that occur with aging that result in decreased muscle strength, slow walking speeds, exhaustion, and decreased handgrip strength.
During these visits, we'll conduct a range of tests and questionnaires designed to understand your physical function and overall health better. These include physical function tests to assess your strength, simple questionnaires to gather information about your daily activities and any changes you might notice, and blood and stool collections to analyze how your body responds to the HMB supplement. In addition, we'll provide you with state-of-the-art MRI and ultrasound scans to get a closer look at your muscle function. These tests are painless and non-invasive, and our team will guide you through every step of the process.
Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.
