Perimenopause Exercise Study

The purpose of this research study is to understand the impact of nutrition, muscle, and exercise on metabolism in perimenopause. We want to know if these outcomes are different in women who are in early or late perimenopause. This study will evaluate your body composition, muscle characteristics, menopause symptoms, stress, mood, metabolism, and exercise performance.

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed

What will be asked of you

Participation in this study will include 3 in-person visits and potentially 28 days of at-home menstrual cycle tracking (if you are still experiencing periods). You will be asked to complete surveys at your convenience regarding your health, menopause symptoms, stress, and mood. At your first visit, we will measure your body composition and muscle characteristics followed by a submaximal exercise test on a stationary bike. Visits 2 and 3 will include measures of your resting metabolic rate, four small blood samples, a randomized nutrition supplement (protein or placebo), and a high intensity exercise protocol on a stationary bike.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • you are perimenopausal (experiencing irregular periods or no periods for <12 months)
  • you are at least 38 years old
  • you have a BMI between 28 and 40 kg/m2

Not eligible if:

  • you are post menopausal (no periods for >12 months and >38 years of age)
  • you are a smoker
  • you have any current or previous metabolic diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders
  • you are currently pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant
  • you have participated in another clinical trial within four weeks prior to enrollment
