Video game therapy for Osteoarthritis (OA)

This study is comparing the effect of video game therapy versus standard physical therapy on outcomes for knee osteoarthritis patients.

Age & Gender

  • 40 years ~ 75 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Visits can be combined with regular clinical appointments

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

You will be asked to complete 8 weeks of physical therapy; two 45-minute sessions in person with a physical therapist and one at-home session per week for the first 4 weeks and one 45-minute in person session with a physical therapist and two at-home sessions per week for the second 4 weeks. This study also involves a pre and post-test measuring pain scale scores, muscle strength, balance, and walking ability. There are also surveys and an interview to complete at the end of the study.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You have a knee osteoarthritis diagnosis
  • You can walk without an assistive device

Not eligible if:

  • You have psychiatric or cognitive impairment (e.g., dementia) that interferes with the ability to follow instructions or provide voluntary consent
  • You have symptomatic spine, hip, ankle, or foot disease other than OA that would interfere with assessment of the knee
  • You have a diagnosis of a neurologic chronic pain condition (e.g., fibromyalgia)
  • Visual or auditory impairment that prohibits engagement with the device's video display
  • Non-English speaking individuals
