Perineal Massage During Pessary Checks

In this study, we want to see if massaging the area around the opening of the vagina (perineal massage) could help lessen pain during pessary exams.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 99 years
  • Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)

Location

North Carolina (Statewide), Virginia

What will be asked of you

At each visit, you will rate your pain before, during, and after the pessary examination. At the first visit, we will randomly decide if you get a gentle massage around the opening of your vagina or no massage at all. At the next visit, you will undergo the opposite of what you had last time.

Total length of participation:
2 back-to-back (consecutive) pessary exam visits

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You have vaginal prolapse
  • You have stress incontinence
  • You are using a pessary for the above conditions

Not eligible if:

  • You have significant cognitive dysfunction
  • You regularly take pain medication for pessary visits and are not willing to stop using them for two visits
  • Your visit is for certain pessary problems (pain, bleeding, pessary falling out)
