4-Week Smart Ring Technology Trial

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the 3rd generation Oura Ring, a smart ring, during a 4-week trial. Additionally, this study will investigate if sleep and cardiovascular health outcomes change during a 4-week Oura Ring trial in middle-aged adults.

  • 40 years ~ 59 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)

What will be asked of you

Your participation will last approximately 4 weeks and involve 3 visits to UNC, each lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. Study visits will take place at the UNC Health, Exercise And Lifestyle (HEAL) Lab located in Fetzer Hall. At the visits, you will complete anthropometric, body composition, and cardiovascular assessments in addition to questionnaires about health, demographics, sleep, physical activity, and the Oura Ring. Body composition will be assessed via a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. You will be asked to wear an Oura Ring for 4 week and complete 3 surveys remotely. After 4 weeks, you will return the Oura Ring.

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • You are 40-59 years old
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is between 18.5 and 34.99 kg/m^2.
  • You are willing and able to use a smartphone application

Not eligible if:

  • You have a pre-existing sleep disorder
  • You have used an Oura Ring in the past 30 days
  • You are currently pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • You have an occupation or lifestyle that regularly disrupts sleep (e.g., shiftwork, newborn)
