Study on Hormones and Mood in Women with Depression

In this study, we want to see how changes in hormones during the menstrual cycle affect how women with Major Depressive Disorder feel.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 45 years
  • Female

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)

What will be asked of you

You will be asked to rate your mood daily over the course of 5 menstrual cycles. During two of those cycles, you will take active hormones (estrogen+progesterone) and placebo (you will get both, but at different times). You will also collect urine samples at home, and will complete 5 in-person lab visits during which we will assess brain activity using EEG.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You are a female with Major Depressive Disorder
  • Your symptoms fluctuate with your menstrual cycle
  • You are medically healthy

Not eligible if:

  • You have a personal or family history of cancer or clotting disorders
  • You are using hormonal birth control
  • You are a smoker
  • You have a history of mania, psychosis, or substance use disorder; active suicidal ideation or an attempt within the last 5 years
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
