C-section Infection Prevention Study

In this study, we are checking if using two antibiotics before a C-section instead of just one can lower the risk of infections. The infections we want to prevent are womb infection, wound infection, or a serious blood infection.

What will be asked of you

This study involves taking azithromycin or a placebo (saline) through your existing IV line. This study also involves a blood sample after you deliver, and from the umbilical cord after being separated from you and your baby.

Incentives

$30 gift card after delivery and $50 gift card after comlpeting 6-week postpartum follow up study visit

Total length of participation:
Through 6 weeks after you deliver your baby

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You are pregnant
  • You are planning to have a scheduled cesarean delivery
  • Your gestational age is more than 23 weeks

Not eligible if:

  • You are allergic to azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • You have taken azithromycin within the past seven (7) days
  • You have a bacterial infection requiring antibiotics
  • You have broken your bag of water or are in labor
  • You have a known heart condition or problem that would prohibit the use of azithromycin
