Breathing and Emotions Study

The purpose of this research study is to learn about how difficult emotions, such as anxiety and fear, relate to feelings in the body. During these visits, you will be asked to participate in a series of breathing tasks. In particular, we will ask you to practice two types of breathing tasks: (1) breathing through a straw, and (2) hyperventilating for a minute at a time. The breathing tasks you will perform are safe and may cause you temporary discomfort or distress. You will also be asked to answer questions about your thinking patterns, beliefs, and mental health. We know that people differ in how they respond to certain bodily sensations, and our goal is to better understand this process.

What will be asked of you

This study includes 2 parts requiring visits to our laboratory. The first part should last 2 hours and will involve completing a series of safe breathing tasks and some online questionnaires. These questionnaires will ask you certain thoughts and experiences you might have with emotions such as distress and anxiety. 4 weeks later, you will complete the second part which will involve similar breathing tasks and questionnaires, and will last 30 minutes long. In total, this study will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete.
