The purpose of this study is to measure the frequency of Lyme disease among humans and their pet dogs in Watauga County, North Carolina. This study will also explore potential demographic, behavioral, environmental, and tick-related risk factors for Lyme disease in both humans and dogs. The information we learn by doing this study will guide future public health efforts to prevent Lyme disease among humans and their pet dogs.
You will be asked to complete 1 to 3 online surveys. You can choose to be tested for Lyme disease by attending 1 weekend testing event for dog owners at the Animal Hospital of Boone. This will require a finger-stick to collect a small amount of blood. If the test is positive, you will need to visit a local UNC health affiliated clinic for a second Lyme disease test that will require a blood draw. You can also choose to have a study staff member to collect ticks around the outside of your house.
