Resistant Hypertension Study

The purpose of this study is to see how prevalent high cortisol levels are in people with high blood pressure that is resistant to treatment.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

You will be asked to answer questions about your health and medications, follow instructions from the study doctor for a dexamethasone suppression test, and potentially have a non-contrast CT scan done. This study involves a blood draw.

Anticipated to be less than 4 weeks

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • you take 3 or more antihypertensive medications at their maximally tolerated doses and your blood pressure is still above target
  • you take 4 or more antihypertensive medications and your blood pressure is at target or above target

Not eligible if:

  • you don't take your blood pressure medications as they are prescribed
  • you have white coat syndrome (high blood pressure only in the doctor's office)
  • you are currently pregnant or lactating, or are currently taking oral contraceptive pills and are unwilling to pause treatment for 6 weeks
  • you have severe untreated sleep apnea
  • you have Cushing syndrome or congential adreanl hyperplasia
