Early Markers of Language Growth in Autistic Toddlers

We are studying language development in toddlers with early language delays and signs of autism. We want to know what helps them gain expressive language over time. We are particularly interested in toddlers from families who receive government assistance like Medicaid, WIC, etc as these families have not often been represented in child development research.

Age & Gender

  • 18 months ~ 36 months
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed
  • In-home visits available

What will be asked of you

What Participants Will Do: (1) Complete online surveys (2) Participate in 3 home visits for us to complete play-based assessments with your child and look at their brain activity using EEG (3) Each visit will take up to 9 hours of your time, including completing surveys and the in-home visit

Incentives

$100 for the first study visit and up to $375 for completing all three study visits, We will provide gas reimbursement and a developmental report at the 1st and 3rd visit.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • Your toddler is 18-21 months old
  • Your toddler says no or very few words
  • Your toddler has traits of autism or an autism diagnosis
  • Your family qualifies for any form of government assistance (e.g., WIC, Medicaid)
  • You and your toddler communicate in English

Not eligible if:

  • Your child is older than 21 months at the time of interest/enrollment
  • The main language spoken around your child is NOT English
