Type 1 Diabetes Management for Rural Families Study

We are looking for families with a child who has type 1 diabetes to join a study. We want to see if our new family coaching program, called REAL-Fam, works well. The program lasts 12 weeks and helps manage diabetes, get the whole family involved, and improve child health. You can join from home using your phone or computer. Families living in rural areas are welcome to be part of this study.

Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina (Statewide), South Dakota

What will be asked of you

We are looking for participants to join a study about using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Your child will need to wear the CGM for 14 weeks. Families will answer some questions about themselves at the start and end of the study. If you join the intervention group, you will attend 12 weekly one-hour online coaching sessions with a trained therapist to learn about managing diabetes every day. If you join the attention group, you will attend three online meetings with a study team member. Both groups will have a chat with us after the study is over.

Incentives

Join our study and receive a $25 Visa gift card three times-once at each data collection point., You will also get a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor and supplies for three months.

Total length of participation:
3 1/2 months

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • Child (aged 2 to 11 yrs) with type 1 diabetes with recently reported A1c > 7.5%
  • Live in a rural area in the Midwest (NE, SD) or South (NC) over 1 hour commute from a pediatric endocrinology care team
  • Caregiver over 19 years old and be designated guardian to a child with type one diabetes
  • Speak English
  • Have reliable internet access

Not eligible if:

  • A child with a severe developmental, intellectual, or neurologic disability
  • Caregivers who are not completing any supervision/support for their child's diabetes management
  • Child is currently receiving occupational therapy services
