Comparing Radiation Therapy to Usual Care for Patients With High-Risk Bone Asymptomatic Metastases (PREEMPT)

This study is being done to determine if preventative radiation therapy will lower the number of bone metastases-related complications (such as fracture caused by the tumor in the bone and tumor pushing on the spinal cord) compared to the usual approach. We are doing this study because we want to find out if this approach is better or worse than the usual approach for your type of cancer. The usual approach is defined as care most people get for high-risk bone metastases that are not causing symptoms.

What will be asked of you

If you decide to take part in this study, before you begin, your doctor will review the results of your exams, tests, and procedures. This helps your doctor decide if it is safe for you to take part in the study. If you join the study, you will have more exams, tests, and procedures to closely monitor your safety and health. Most of these are included in the usual care you would get even if you were not in a study. Some exams, tests, and procedures are a necessary part of the research study, but would not be included in usual care. All participants will be asked to complete two forms with questions about your pain, physical, and emotional well-being. Researchers will use this information to learn more about how cancer and cancer treatment affects the symptoms people experience. Additionally, participants will be asked to participate in optional sample collections.
