Opera Singers in the Twenty-First Century

This study gathers information about the experiences of opera singers who have worked in the American opera industry between 2000 and 2025. The data will be used to support a PhD dissertation in musicology.

What will be asked of you

You will first fill out an online survey about yourself and your professional experiences in the American opera industry. Afterward, you will be given the option to participate in a 30- to 60-minute virtual interview.

Up to 3 hours total

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • You studied opera at a college, university, or conservatory in America between 2000 and 2025.
  • You participated in a pay-to-sing, summerstock, young artist, or resident artist program in America between 2000 and 2025.
  • You sang opera full-time or part-time as a primary or secondary career in America between 2000 and 2025.
  • You sang opera part-time in the context of a broader musical career in America between 2000 and 2025.
  • You used to sing opera in America between 2000 and 2025, but you retired or moved on to a different career.

Not eligible if:

  • None
