Teen Stress and Loss of Enjoyment Study

We want to understand how the brain and the body's stress responses contribute to anhedonia (the loss of enjoyment) in teens over time. Our big question is whether different patterns of activity in the brain and body are linked to loss of enjoyment, and how they change over time.

Age & Gender

  • 13 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed

Location

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

Your teen will visit UNC both online and in person at 3 points in time over 20 months. Each time, they'll fill out surveys, get brain pictures taken, and do tasks to see how they think and respond to stress. We'll also ask you, the guardian, to fill out some surveys about themselves your teen.

Incentives

Teens can earn up to $590 and caregivers can earn up to $225

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • You have a teen 13-15 years old

Not eligible if:

  • Your teen has braces or other metal implants that can't be removed
