Aging on the Coast: Making sure older adults are included in emergency plans

North Carolina's coastal communities are changing. More people are choosing to age along the coast, and at the same time, storms, flooding, and other weather-related challenges are becoming more common. This project is about listening. We want to understand how adults ages 65 and older experience emergency planning in their coastal communities and whether they feel their voices are heard. If you are 65 or older and live in a North Carolina coastal county, we invite you to share your perspective. Participants will take part in a one-on-one virtual interview lasting about 45 minutes. Your experiences can help communities plan better and more fairly for the future.

Age & Gender

  • 65 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Location

North Carolina (Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Tyrrell, Washington)

What will be asked of you

If you choose to participate, you'll join a 45-minute virtual interview with a researcher. You'll be asked to talk about your experiences living on the coast, how prepared you feel for emergencies and what local governments can do to help you feel included and prepared. This is a conversation, not a test. Your insights will help researchers and communities better understand how to support older adults who want to continue living safely on the coast.

Total length of participation:
45 minutes
