Reasons for dialysis circuit clotting

We want to learn why and how some people on dialysis form blood clots in the dialysis machine or in their fistula. Most patients on dialysis receive a blood thinner called heparin to prevent these clots, but heparin can sometimes cause bleeding. We would like to know if safer medications could work in preventing these clots. This study is only about learning more information from blood samples and does not involve treatment.

HIV-Associated Lung Disease: The Role of Nasal Mucosal Immunity and Microbiome

Some people living with HIV can have chronic lung and breathing issues. We want to learn if the immune system of the nose may lead to these problems. We will collect a sample from the nose using a small strip of paper put in the nose for two minutes. This sample will be tested for inflammation and bacteria. We will do this test in 150 people with HIV and 100 without HIV. We will ask 100 people to come back in 6 months to do the sample again.

Total Femoral Replacement and Osseointegrated Amputation Patient-Reported OutcomesTotal Femoral Replacement and Osseointegrated Amputation Patient-Reported Outcomes

The goal of this study is to look into the patient-reported and functional outcomes of patients who have undergone total femoral replacement or osseointegrated amputation for oncologic and traumatic indications. We want to see if functional and patient-reported outcomes are correlated and if patient satisfaction with the implants differs between surgical indications.

Research study to prevent and reduce exposure to contaminated private well drinking water.

Research study to prevent and reduce exposure to contaminated private well drinking water. Once participants provide consent, project staff administer a survey of prior well testing behavior, online or on paper. All consented participants who complete the survey receive a well test kit (via US mail or in person), which includes instructions, bottles, and an information sheet that requires participants to provide name / address and confirm they have followed recommended sampling protocol. Participants return samples to project staff, who will deliver samples to the UNC Superfund Research Program lab in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Once samples have been processed, project staff develop report-back letters and share results with participants. Within 3-6 months of results being provided, project staff will send an electronic or paper evaluation survey to participants, to document any water treatment actions and understand participant recall of test results and satisfaction with study participation.

Be CALM for Early College High Schools

Students in advanced academic programming, such as that provided in Early College High Schools (ECHSs), may experience stress that interferes with their academic success. Although ECHSs provide many supports to students, there is a need for additional programming to support students' social-emotional development and stress resilience. This study involves further developing, refining, implementing, and testing a multi-tiered adaptation of Be CALM (Cool, Attentive, Logical, and Mature), a mindfulness-based SEL program that aims to enhance staff and student wellbeing and SEL competencies. Mindfulness is a practice of Pressing the Pause on purpose and Tuning In to the present moment with a curious and kind attitude that has been shown to benefit social and emotional wellbeing in students. We expect that knowledge gained from this study will be used to advance understanding of how mindfulness may be helpful to ECHS students, teachers, and counselors.
