Research has shown that effective use of reading strategies contributes to reading comprehension. Thus far, most studies on reading strategy use have been conducted with second language (L2) readers of alphabetic languages such as English. There has been scant research on reading strategy use of Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners. Among the limited studies examining reading strategies employed by CSL learners, the majority were focused on advanced learner's reading strategies, and less attention has been devoted to intermediate-level learners. Furthermore, although a small number of studies investigating intermediate-level CLS learners' reading strategy use had both non-heritage and heritage participants, no comparison between the two groups was made. Given the vast differences of the learning profiles of heritage and non-heritage CSL students, it is possible that the reading strategies adopted by the two groups and the learning outcomes could be quite different. This study addresses this gap in literature.

This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of Long COVID following SARS-COV-2 infection through survey responses to better understand the condition.

This study is helping to plan and evaluate a SNAP in Schools component of a Coordinating SNAP and Nutrition Support project being carried out by partner organizations in North Carolina. The study includes a survey to see if families attending Buncombe County Schools are aware of and using food resources such as Food and Nutrition Services (FNS)/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and school meals. The responses provided will be used to help plan activities to increase awareness and access to food assistance resources for Buncombe County Schools families.

The purpose of Project Open is to improve augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The current study will focus on in-person interactions with AAC. It will focus on adults with ALS, cerebral palsy, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. We will video participants using AAC in everyday settings. We will video participants using AAC in planned ways. We will code the videos. We will look for problems that occur. We will look for the ways that problems are avoided. We will look for the ways that problems are repaired. The results will help us develop new AAC technology.

This study will investigate two different systems to help analysts enter operator comments (i.e., annotations) on transcripts of audio conversations.

The purpose of this research study is to assess how inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) influences reproductive and contraceptive concerns for young women with IBD and to explore their preferences regarding contraceptive counseling in the IBD clinic. The results from this study will give providers essential insight into the contraceptive use concerns and preferences of young women with IBD.

Some people living with HIV can have chronic lung and breathing issues. We want to learn if the immune system of the nose may lead to these problems. We will collect a sample from the nose using a small strip of paper put in the nose for two minutes. This sample will be tested for inflammation and bacteria. We will do this test in 150 people with HIV and 100 without HIV. We will ask 100 people to come back in 6 months to do the sample again.

Analyze how usage of a visualization tool that provides data quality analysis can affect a data scientist's workflow during data preprocessing

We want to learn why and how some people on dialysis form blood clots in the dialysis machine or in their fistula. Most patients on dialysis receive a blood thinner called heparin to prevent these clots, but heparin can sometimes cause bleeding. We would like to know if safer medications could work in preventing these clots. This study is only about learning more information from blood samples and does not involve treatment.

The purpose of this research study is to analyze the national health policy for migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic in two different countries, Singapore and the United States, to systematically assess the effect that national health policy for migrants had on health system resilience. This study will provide a new perspective by cross-analyzing two different nation's migrant health protection policies and draw some thematic comparisons through these case studies.
