A study on the recommendation method to support target variable selection in machine learning

As machine learning is accepted as one of the most powerful tools to solve problems that involve a large amount of data, more and more application areas started to explore and adopt machine learning methods into their workflows. The first step of developing a machine learning model is to determine the target variable, i.e. what to predict. For instance, if a practitioner wants to develop a model to assist hiring decisions, he/she may choose a candidate's performance score as the prediction target to train the machine learning model. In practice, practitioners need to experiment and evaluate a large set of potential target variables until they reach a satisfactory one. We would like to automate the evaluation of target variables and recommend good ones to the users. The purpose of this study is to understand how different recommendation strategies influence the target selection process.

Survey Polarization & Context

The purpose of the study is to analyze if asking questions on polarizing topics reduces response quality The study will analyze the research question using an experiment. Respondents will be randomly assigned to one of two main conditions. The experimental group will receive uncomfortable or embarrassing true-or-false questions about their political party, depending on what party they identify with. The questions are factual but may be perceived as biased or polarizing. The control group will receive 3 true-or-false questions about Democrats and 3 true-or-false questions about Republicans. Later, the researcher will compare instances/rates of satisficing, affective polarization, sentiment codes, internal consistency, conformity, and truthfulness between the experimental and control groups.

Group Model Building with family caregivers of persons with cognitive impairment

Family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment experience significant care burden, impacting their mental health and well-being. Studies indicate that heightened caregiver burden can negatively affect the caregiver-patient relationship, leading to increased behavioral and psychological symptoms in patients with cognitive impairment. These symptoms, in turn, increase caregiver burden and worsen their mental health. However, limited evidence characterizes these complex interpersonal dynamics. Therefore, the overall objective of the study is to deeply explore the experiences of family caregivers of individuals with cognitive impairment, with a focus on their mental well-being.

Pandemic partnerships: Schools, families, and educational inequality during COVID-19

Our project aims to document how COVID-19 is changing schools and families, and to trace the ways these changes are shaping educational inequality. In collaboration with North Carolina's Guilford County Schools, we are surveying school leaders, teachers, and parents and guardians about the academic, material, and socio-emotional resources that school communities are collectively employing in response to the pandemic. Our analyses will document school school/family collaboration during the COVID-19 crisis; investigate racial and socioeconomic inequalities in access to school services and supports; and evaluate the consequences of school supports and school/family collaboration for learning loses during the pandemic-induced interruption in regular schooling. Ultimately, we hope this project will shed light on strategies that can mitigate the pandemic's potentially disastrous consequences for educational inequality.

Gaze Tracking in Workplace Productivity Study

The purpose of this study is to understand how people use their eyes while working on tasks using multiple computer screens. We want to learn how eye movements change when people do structured tasks given by the research team compared to when they do their own regular work. This information can help us improve future technology, like smart glasses, to make working with virtual screens easier and more comfortable.
