Hypertonic Saline in Non-CF Bronchiectasis

Does hypertonic saline improve mucus clearance in bronchiectasis? The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the effects of 7% hypertonic saline (HS) delivered by nebulizer on clearance of mucus from the lungs in people with bronchiectasis. We will compare mucociliary clearance (MCC: a measurement of the rate at which a person's lungs can clear inhaled particles) at baseline, after a single dose of HS, and after two weeks of treatment with HS twice a day. We will also assess response to HS with other outcomes (spirometry, multiple breath washout [MBW], changes in sputum [coughed up mucus or phlegm], and survey responses). Compensation provided.
