Equity in North Carolina Medicaid

The overarching objective of the UNC CHER Medicaid Equity project is to develop the capacity and vision within NC Medicaid, necessary to lead and carry out the work of equity reform in policy. North Carolina Medicaid is undergoing a transformation of services, launching several health care initiatives, including Standard Plans, Tailored Plans, EBCI Tribal Option, Foster Care Health Plan and the Healthy Opportunities Pilot. Each of these initiatives incorporate health equity throughout their design and implementation. To most effectively incorporate health equity within North Carolina Medicaid and elicit accurate responses, external stakeholder engagement is required to determine how Medicaid policies can be improved.

Moral Distress Nurses

The purpose of this study is to explore how moral distress impacted CCNs who actively engaged in practice during the pandemic and today. A quantitative survey design will be used to gather CCNs perceptions of moral distress using the Moral Distress Scale-Revised (MDS-R., Epstein et al, 2021); additional open-ended questions at the end of the survey will be used to gauge nurses' coping strategies and supports available to deal with moral distress. The open-ended questions will be derived from the literature, integrate the PIs observations, and used to complement findings from the MDS-R. The focus of this study will be solely on critical care nurses that worked through the COVID-19 pandemic due to the high-stress nature of that unit

Study of Animal Images for Conservation and Charity

The purpose of this study is to research the effect of different animal images in swaying viewers' intent to take action for the benefit of the pictured animal species. We intend to show participants pictures of animals in different environments with different emotional states and nature pictures and use survey questions to determine if the pictures affect viewers' intentions to help organizations that help the animal species pictured. We are hoping that this research will help those working on behalf of animal conservation in selecting pictures for charity work.

Delirium Tele-medicine Validation Study

We don't know whether discharging patients with active delirium (aka confusion) home is appropriate. Returning patients to their home may lead to improvement and quicker delirium resolution. Alternately, it may be harmful as delirious patients may not be able to appropriately care for themselves in the home environment or follow discharge instructions. Consequently, they may get sicker, requiring hospital readmission or worse. Currently, there is no good way to assess delirium in the home setting. This greatly limits the ability to monitor and study this vulnerable population. The ability to perform in-home delirium assessments will prove invaluable to researchers investigating the a-propriateness of discharging actively delirious patients' home versus keeping them in the hospital until resolution of their delirium. Further, it will provide a method for clinicians to perform quick, remote delirium assessments of their patients.
