Skin Health Awareness and Preventative Practices

The purpose of this study is to understand how much people know about skin cancer and how they protect their skin. We are looking at people's knowledge about different types of skin cancer and their behaviors to prevent it. We want to see if there are common habits or barriers that affect how people take care of their skin. By learning more about these things, we hope to improve ways to promote skin health and prevent skin cancer.

Hypertonic Saline in Non-CF Bronchiectasis

Does hypertonic saline improve mucus clearance in bronchiectasis? The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the effects of 7% hypertonic saline (HS) delivered by nebulizer on clearance of mucus from the lungs in people with bronchiectasis. We will compare mucociliary clearance (MCC: a measurement of the rate at which a person's lungs can clear inhaled particles) at baseline, after a single dose of HS, and after two weeks of treatment with HS twice a day. We will also assess response to HS with other outcomes (spirometry, multiple breath washout [MBW], changes in sputum [coughed up mucus or phlegm], and survey responses). Compensation provided. No blood draws required.

AI-assisted Deceptive Hotel Review Detection

The purpose of this research study is to investigate how human interpret some predictive learned by AI systems when detecting deceptive hotel reviews and how AI explanations can shape human understanding. For instance, the AI system learns that words like "floor" and "bathroom" are highly predictive of genuine reviews and words like "husband" and "luxury" are highly predictive of deceptive reviews. While the AI system highlights these words by learning from the data, the association between these words and the outcome are not easy to comprehend for humans. Thus, our goal of this research is to investigate how participants interact with machine-generated explanations that are unintuitive, and how participants make use of our developed visualizations and tools to make sense of these unintuitive features.
